Track Biography:

Over the years there have been many historic venues for the annual Point-to-Point races. Official races under rules were last held in Lisbunny in 1914 at what was known as the Old Racecourse.

First recorded Point-to-Point of the North Tipperary Foxhounds was in Blean, Toomevara in 1908 and afterwards at the old racecourse Lisboney adjacent to our current race meeting.  In intervening years it had been back and forth in various locations, Grange and Stereme.

In the mid 30’s they moved to Carrick Hill in Ballycommon, then to Blean in Toomevara in the early 40’s before an outbreak of foot and mouth disease forced a change of venue again to Grange in the mid 40’s. Here the races proved extremely popular with a great vantage point from Grange Hill. References to race meetings in the 1950’s in Grange included crossing ploughed fields.

In 1965 they moved from Grange back to the ‘Old Racecourse’ in Lisbunny before moving to Stereame in 1970, where they remained up until 2000. Stereame has been synonymous with racing in Nenagh for over thirty years and has seen many great horses pass the winning post including Elegant Lord, Doran’s Pride and many more. The meeting was moved to its current location in Lisboney on the Dublin road.

Our landowner in both of these locations is our current hunt Chairman Mr Peter McCutcheon whose family have been synonymous with hunting in North Tipperary since the early 1900’s.

Many great horses have won at Lisboney and have gone on to better things on the track such as English Grand National winner Silver Birch who was trained by Gordon Elliot.

THE PUNISHER overcame early interference on his debut to finish an encouraging second at Lisronagh prior to Christmas. Having proven himself in the testing underfoot conditions, he enters the race with the strongest form in the book. No Secrets Here overcame a bad mistake at the second last to still hold strong claims when coming down at the final fence at Tattersalls before Christmas. Providing he puts in a clear round here, he has to be fancied to go close. Hurricane Dylan, a promising third at Ballindenisk, is another to hold place claims.

AINTREE MY DREAM has been unlucky to part company with his rider on his latest two outings having likely been set to finish in the placings at Tattersalls last month on his penultimate start. That form will entitle him to go close here. Gandhi is a solid type who has twice finished in the placings, whilst Royal And Rebels was a creditable second at Dromahane back in April, however he has struggled to re-capture that effort. Storm At Sea is another not without chances

GIVEABOBBACK has been a consistent type this season, and whilst he has not won in over five years, he is proven at Open level. This is not the strongest of races on paper and it could see him return to winning ways. Hit The Upright won well at Corbeagh House back in November and there could be some improvement to come from him on his first start in winners company, whilst Carraig Thuathail is arguably better than his latest effort indicates and is worth giving a second chance.

CARRIGEEN ACEBO ran a cracking race at Thurles to end-up as the only horse capable of challenging the eventual winner Two Rockers. There is nothing of that standard in opposition here, and she is more than capable of taking this. Eala Beag, Not Before Eight and Pocket Reader are all capable of landing challenging efforts if putting their best foot forward, although each will have to step-up on their most recent runs.

HARRY THE LEMMON is an interesting entry here, as whilst the Milan gelding is now a ten-year-old, he has finished placed on his last three starts under rules with James Ewart and has the necessary experienced which may see him through this. Cloud Stone is far less exposed and ran with real promise when finishing a close second on his debut at Borris. That effort offers the necessary encouragement to suggest that he could well go close with conditions likely to suit.

MINMORE OSCAR has finished second on her last three starts and is now most deserving of a maiden success. Proven in the ground conditions, this could well be the opportunity which sees her consistency rewarded. Misty Mai appears to excel in testing conditions and with two second placed efforts to her name, she will ensure the selection faces a decent challenge. The newcomer How Much Is Enough may be of interest also.
