Track Biography:

The North Down point-to-point moved to its current course at Kirkistown in 2006 and have held three meetings each season since then. The course is located towards the eastern side of the Ards Peninsula near the village of Portavogie.  It’s in an area that was used as an airfield during the war and hence is very flat and well drained.

Kirkistown is a very level left handed course run over a circuit just short of a mile. Runners jump two fences close to the spectator’s area and a further three along the back straight.

Our November fixture is normally the final meeting of the autumn calendar in the northern area. Conversely, our February and March fixtures are two of the earliest in the northern spring calendar.

Some of the leading graduates from our point-to-point include Simonsig, Petit Mouchoir & Agus A Vic.

How To Get There

From Newtownards

Take the A20, signposted to Kircubbin/Portaferry. After Kircubbin turn left into the B173, signposted to Portavogie/Cloughey. Follow this road for about 3 miles and you will pass the Kirkistown Motor Racing Track on your left. After a further half mile you will see the entrance to our track on your left.

From Newry and south of the border

Take the A1 north to Hillsborough.  Then go through Hillsborough and follow the signs for Carryduff/Comber on the B178. Join the A21 and go through Comber to Newtownards. Follow the directions above from Newtownards. There is an alternative route using the Strangford to Portaferry ferry which is about 15 miles shorter.

From the West

Leave the M1 at Lisburn (junction 6). Take the A49 and then follow the signs for Carryduff/Comber on the B178. Join the A21 and go through Comber to Newtownards. Follow the directions above from Newtownards.

By Air

Our point-to-point is located an hour and a half from Belfast International airport and two and a half hours from Dublin airport.

Gordon Elliott and Gigginstown House Stud were on the scoreboard in the four-year-old division at Oldtown last Sunday, and either of their three entrants here, MINDS EYE, OR JAUNE DE SOMOZA and TRAINWRECK will likely set the standard. With the majority of the four-year-olds in here also double entered in Punchestown tomorrow, the market will give an indication of who could provide the biggest threat.

CLONDAW NELL held a number of entries last weekend, however connections could well be rewarded for the decision not to run last week with success here, as she picked-up two placed finishes at Boulta and Templencarriga earlier in the season in competitive contests. She will also come here fresher than Alkajazz who bounced back to form when narrowly beaten at Tyrella, however that was just 7 days ago in testing conditions. Kaites Hen was disappointing at Ballinaboola last time, but she has claims on her best form.

THE SECRET MASON has struggled to complete in recent starts, coming down at the first at Tyrella on his latest outing, however he was in the process of running a big race around here when coming down at the last in November, and can take this with a clear round of jumping. Templehills ran well for a long way around here back in March in a four-year-old maiden and therefore it would be no great surprise to see him get more competitive in this as he comes fresh here for what is his re-appearance run. Minella For All and Sizingdowntherhine represent respected connections and are of note ahead of their debuts.

MARASONNIEN was a Grade 1 winner at the Punchestown Festival back in 2012, and therefore he is the class horse in the race. He struggled to make much of an impact on his pointing debut at Killeagh last month, however that was his return from a long lay-off and he is therefore worth a second chance. Not Before Eight was well beaten in Hunter Chase company last time, however he was third around here in the Autumn and may be best placed to score if the selection disappoints. One Cool Clarkson has been running well lately and has strong place claims.

ROCKPORTIAN was a very easy winner at Tyrella last weekend in what looks a very much above average maiden, and so he is taken to quickly double his winning tally here. Shake It Up was twice placed in maiden hurdles and he could well bounce back to form on his return between the flags, whilst Redbridge Rudi narrowly beat a subsequent winner when scoring at Ballinaboola. With that form having received a timely boost, he could well be a threat.

SIZINGDOWNTHERHINE is out a three-time track winner who is from the family of the Graded placed Measureofmydreams, and with that pedigree behind him, he may be worth siding with here on his debut. Stable companion Terry Tibs has placed form in the book, however he was beaten when falling at Tinahely last time on his re-appearance from a long break, whilst The Brandy Man is another who has hinted at ability in the past.
