Track Biography:

The Avondhu foxhounds were formed in 1920, with point-to-point racing being held as part of the Cork Waterford circuit from the late 1930's until the present day. In the late 1950’s the meeting was held at Knockanard, Fermoy and racing was over banks.

In the 1960's the venue changed once again, this time to Lisnagar outside Rathcormac. The fixture remained here for a number of years before moving to Moorpark, located just outside Fermoy, where it stayed until 1994 where it return to the original venue at Knockanard, the current race venue.

Our fixture has attracted some good horses over the years including Keen Leader, For Bill, Missed That and Joacci. Missed That won on his only start between the flags as a five-year-old at Knockanard, he subsequently won the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival.

For Bill was a prolific race mare, clocking up eleven career wins including, two point-to-points, three national hunt flat races (bumpers), three hurdles and three chases, registering back type over hurdles and fences. The presenting mare has breed one runner thus far, Speak Easy, who won his maiden point-to-point at Kilworth in March of 2017 for the Donnnchadh Doyle yard and was subsequently sold to Joseph O'Brien for 220,000 pounds and now runs in the colours of J. P. McManus.

Nestled in the Irish countryside, a day out at Knockanard point-to-point is a perfect family occasion, get up close and personal with the future stars of the Irish National Hunt scene.

Denis Murphy won a similar contest last Sunday at Tallow with Paul and it may be worth following his newcomer LOUGH DERG JEWEL here as the son of Oscar is out of a three-time track winner. Roughty King was placed at Inch last April and if he was able to re-capture that form he would likely have the strongest form in the book of those with previous experience to their names, although this could be a race to side with the newcomers.

STRANGSMILL created a very favourable impression when finishing second to the vastly more experienced Lastpop at Dungarvan last month, and with that initial experience under her belt, she can step-up to score here having already proven herself in testing conditions. Thats My Goal and Ms Princess both have placed form to their names, and they therefore hold place claims.

LEADERS CHOICE has been a credit to connections and fails to ever run a bad race. She was only narrowly beaten by a battle-hardened mare in Bennys Girl at Ballyvodock on her first outing in winners company and she should gain due compensation here. Inchiquin High could provide the main opposition following her latest success at Killeagh, whilst Silver Serenade is seeking a hat-trick and will likely not be far away.

MARASONNIEN is entered in all three meetings this weekend and this former Grade 1 winner is entitled to a second chance wherever he turns up, having likely needed the run at Killeagh last month on what was his return from a significant absence. The mare Theatre Princess was a winner in Mares Open company last season and should be able to get involved, Truckin All Night was second over fences at Thurles this time last year, whilst Strideout Euro has been in good form this season winning twice, and he could be interesting on his first start at Open level.

TRIXIESBARRY disappointed at Tinahely last time out behind Goldmineinthesky who has come out and won again at Oldtown last Sunday, and if leaving that run behind him, it could be worth siding with this five-times previously placed Oscar gelding who has the experience in the book. The mare Carmajo is another with placed form to her name, whilst All To One Side was still involved when coming down on debut at Killeagh and is unexposed.

SYCAMORE BOY should make a winning return to action here on the back of his fine second at Templemore last season and is open to have stepped-up from it also. Rockinrolldixie could be the main danger as he finished within 5 lengths of Knockraha Boss at Rathcannon, and that race has produced a number of maiden winners, whilst the winner has since finished placed three times on the track. Quarry Wizzard has claims on his Templencarriga run but disappointed at Tallow last week, whilst Ben Arthur ran well at Killeagh and can improve.
