Track Biography:

The North Down point-to-point moved to its current course at Kirkistown in 2006 and have held three meetings each season since then. The course is located towards the eastern side of the Ards Peninsula near the village of Portavogie.  It’s in an area that was used as an airfield during the war and hence is very flat and well drained.

Kirkistown is a very level left handed course run over a circuit just short of a mile. Runners jump two fences close to the spectator’s area and a further three along the back straight.

Our November fixture is normally the final meeting of the autumn calendar in the northern area. Conversely, our February and March fixtures are two of the earliest in the northern spring calendar.

Some of the leading graduates from our point-to-point include Simonsig, Petit Mouchoir & Agus A Vic.

How To Get There

From Newtownards

Take the A20, signposted to Kircubbin/Portaferry. After Kircubbin turn left into the B173, signposted to Portavogie/Cloughey. Follow this road for about 3 miles and you will pass the Kirkistown Motor Racing Track on your left. After a further half mile you will see the entrance to our track on your left.

From Newry and south of the border

Take the A1 north to Hillsborough.  Then go through Hillsborough and follow the signs for Carryduff/Comber on the B178. Join the A21 and go through Comber to Newtownards. Follow the directions above from Newtownards. There is an alternative route using the Strangford to Portaferry ferry which is about 15 miles shorter.

From the West

Leave the M1 at Lisburn (junction 6). Take the A49 and then follow the signs for Carryduff/Comber on the B178. Join the A21 and go through Comber to Newtownards. Follow the directions above from Newtownards.

By Air

Our point-to-point is located an hour and a half from Belfast International airport and two and a half hours from Dublin airport.

The colours of Chris Connolly were carried to an impressive success in a four-year-old maiden last season at Maralin with Baltazar Dallier, and he is represented by ELEGANT ESCAPE here who will be of note on his debut. Denis Murphy has his string in good form with a notable four-year-old winner at The Pigeons last Saturday and as a result his Another Stowaway could go close.

FOREVER DYLAN was holding strong place claims when parting company with his rider on his latest outing at Tyrellan and as a result of that promising effort he sets the standard for this. Coolmeen Hill from the Eoin Doyle yard ran better than the bare fifth of his debut effort at Lisronagh before Christmas suggests, and he can take a step forward here. The Facilitator was running well on his debut at Tinahely and is another that can hold claims.

COMMERCIAL RUIN was only beaten by a length at Tyrella back in early February and having still remained in contention when coming down at the penultimate fence at Armagh a fortnight ago, she looks up to winning a maiden which this race may be the ideal opportunity to do so. Hayley Belle was a promising third on debut over course and distance last month, whilst Bawnogues Bahri is another with course form to her name.

CHOSEN DREAM is a prolific Open winner and although he failed to complete at Belharbour last month, he is capable of getting back to winning ways here. The Hard Hat has been slightly below par on his latest two outings, but if bouncing back to form her can go close having won in the Autumn, whilst stable mate Maple Mons is in search of her third straight success. Boruing Up A Storm makes his debut in Open company and has been in good form this season which gives him claims.

SIZINGDOWNTHERHINE made a winning debut over course and distance back in February and he can quickly follow-up here. Slemish also got off the mark on that same card and he was an impressive winner when doing so which ensures that he will give the selection a very strong challenge. Kraken Tale has parted company with his rider on his latest two outings, however a clear round of jumping would allow him to come into contention.

STEP BACK was only beaten by little over a length at Largy towards the end of last season and whilst he may have ended that campaign with a somewhat below par effort at Necarne, a return to the promise of that Largy run may leave him as the one to side with. Poyntzpass ran well at Durrow last month and can step up from that, whilst Thornleigh Henry is a consistent type and can once again get in the shake-up for the placed honours.
