Track Biography:

The Roscommon hunt point-to-point was originally run over 3 and 1/3 m at Moyliss in Fuerty until the late 1940’s and included stone walls and other natural fences with part of the track run over ploughed ground. The point-to-point races ended with the demise of the hunt in the 50’s.

The hunt was revived in the Millennium Year of 2000, and on the 2nd of November 2002 the point-to-point was held at Lisbride outside Roscommon where six races were run on land owned by Mr Michael McSharry. Lisbride was home to the point-to-point until 2008 when a new track was provided by brothers Pat and Michael Bailey at Rockfield which is still home to the meeting.

The track is left handed and oval in shape, which is run over a mile in circumference with three fences in the back straight and two in the finishing straight with all fences being jumped three times.

In 2015 one of the Irelands most up-and-coming trainers, Joseph O’Brien trained his first winner at Roscommon point-to-point when his charge Minella For Me won the five-year-old maiden.

Other leading names to have emerged from Roscommon point-to-point is the 2016 winner of the four-year-old maiden, Poli Roi was sold five days later at the Tattersalls Cheltenham Sales for £300,000.

How To Get There

By Road

From Dublin and the south take the M6 to Athlone. Then take the N61 to Roscommon and travel west on the N60 towards Castlerea from Roscommon Town for about four miles and the track is visible on the left hand side of the main road.

By Air

Dublin airport is a two hour drive away from the track.

Knock airport is a 50 minute drive away.

Whilst Jack Devine may have finished second on two of his four starts to date, with his latest Castletown effort appearing to mark a return to form on his part, the marginal preference is given to the Donnchadh Doyle-trained THE GREAT GETAWAY who finished third behind two of last seasons very impressive winners, Drovers Lane and Getabird which could give him the edge. Patriots Prayer chased home the impressive Jerrysback at Loughanmore last month and he is entitled to hold claims, whilst there are a number of nicely bred sorts entered here who should be closely watched in the betting.

Returning from an absence of in excess of a year-and-a-half, Whatswrongwithyou brings a very interesting form line into the race as he chased home Invitation Only, a subsequent two-time Bumper winner for Willie Mullins, on his sole outing at Ballynoe in 2015. Owing to that long-absence, the marginal preference is given to DONT ACT UP, a horse who was let down by his jumping at Tinahely last month, but still managed to finish a strong second and he comes here with recent race fitness to his name. Fightfirewithfire and Buberry are others worth noting in what could be a competitive heat.

The Jim Dreaper-trained SIZINGDOWNTHERHINE was a comfortable maiden winner at Kirkistown on debut last season and whilst he had his colours lowered on his first outing in winners company at the same venue a month later, the form of that race has worked out well and he is of interest on his seasonal re-appearance. Sandycove Island was a decent maiden winner at Rathcannon recently, when beating last weeks Dowth Hall victor Barn Braq to give his form a boost, whilst Double Captain is back between the flags following a luckless campaign inside the rails.

The could prove to be a very competitive race if some of the leading principals take their place in the line-up, however the selection would have to go to the recent impressive Portrush victor VALMY BAIE who is one of the top open horses on the circuit at present. Sydney Paget will provide him with a big challenge however on his seasonal re-appearance having won five-times last season including in this contest 12 months ago, whilst Ourmanmassini, a dual wide-margin winner already this season, and Sizing Solution, who narrowly defeated Valmy Baie at Toome, are just two other very capable horses amongst the entry.

The Pat Coffey-trained AR FHEABHAS AR FAD was unable to land a challenge in two starts under rules during the summer, however she ended last season with a promising second at Kinsale in a 13-runner contest, and if she was able to re-capture that form, she may the one to follow in an open contest for a stable who won a similar contest at Dowth Hall last week. Aines Choice disappointed at Rathcannon when re-appearing just a week after her Loughrea third, and she could be the main danger if back to her best, whilst Kilganer Queen caught the eye at Loughrea last month and could be capable of taking a step forward here.
