Track Biography:
The Ballymacad hunting history dates back to 1730 and they have always strived to every aspect they participate in be it hunting, running a hunter trials and Point-to-Point.
The original Ballymacad Point-to-Point meeting was held in Crossakiel was the most exciting event of the year when even the local school closed for the day. In a large field on the northern slope of the hill, tents were set up and a festival atmosphere was created with women would sell the race cards and trick-of-the-loop tables were set up. The start was in the next field and all that could be seen was the jockeys colours through the hedge until they suddenly appeared jumping the last fence where the whipper-in would gallop up and down to keep the crowds back off the track right up to the winning post! Some of the natural obstacles are still used by those out hunting to this day.
In 1977 the event moved to its current venue at Newcastle, Oldcastle which provides a great natural course with great viewing for spectators.
The four year old maiden race has provided a start for some very successful horses on the track including Our Vic and the most recent being the Willie Mullins trained Live Love Laugh. The very famous Flashing Steel owned by Charlie Haughey also had a win in Oldcastle.
With its white railing, the course and facilities create the feel of being at an actual race meeting. The Clerk of the Course has spent years perfecting the ground, to ensure the best underfoot conditions are on offer to owners, trainers and jockeys.
How To Get There
By Road
From Dublin -Take the M3 to Maghera. Turn left. Straight through the crossroads. At the T-Junction, turn right and the track is approximately 1 mile on the left.
From the West - From Mullingar travel to Castlepollard & onto Oldcastle. Take the Cavan Road and at the Oil Depot turn right and the track is approximately 1 mile on the right.
By Air
Dublin Airport is approximately 60 minutes from Newcastle. Car Hire is readily available at Arrivals at Dublin Airport. A regular bus service leaves the airport for Virginia & Kells and taxis are available in both towns.

The Colin McKeever-trained BLUE FLIGHT holds alternative entries elsewhere this weekend, however if taking up this engagement he could be the one to beating owing to a promising second on debut at Portrush which saw him chase home the impressive Some Man. Donjon was hampered and lost his rider at the final fence at Castletown in a small field contest and it will be interesting to see how he fares here, whilst Clondaggan, Derby and Johnny Yuma are all horses to have made the frame on debut and capable of getting involved here.

Narrowly denied last time out, she could can get off the mark in this contest. The latter pair are both five-time winners this season and in the race to become champion point-to-point horse. In the unlikely event all three appear here preference is given to Sprintingforgold, but all are capable of winning races this weekend. Need To Know was back to his best at Courtown last Sunday and enters the race in good form. In contrast, B L Swagger was overturned as the favourite in Ballynoe last-time.

SIZING ROME, an expensive six-figure store purchase was heavily backed on debut at Kirkistown and he duly obliged in a tactical contest. It would be no surprise to see him remain unbeaten by doubling his tally in this contest. Intheghetto ran well in a very competitive hunt race at The Pigeons in testing conditions and he has the experience to challenge the selection. Novo Dawn ran well last Sunday, whilst maiden winner Lord Getaway is another place contender.

DAMUT IM OUT may well have finished second of just two runners at Castletown recently, however he was far from disgraced against a horse who is now a three-time winner on the bounce. This is likely to be closer to his level. The Bright Cherry and Our Harry finished third and fourth respectively in a maiden on that same Castletown card and can get closer here, whilst First Crusade would have to be seen as a big danger if re-capturing the form of his Ballinaboola run, having disappointed at Borris more recently when a well-beaten favourite.
