Track Biography:

The first Westmeath Foxhounds point-to-point took place in Loughegar in 1875. The Westmeath Foxhounds point to point committee have been holding meetings in Castletown Geoghegan for almost forty years. Prior to that, meetings were held at Mullingar Racecourse at Newbrook and Cullion, now the venue of Mullingar Showgrounds and Mullingar Rugby grounds.

During our Spring fixture we have one of the most prestigious contests run in the point-to-point circuit, the Barbour Cup. It has been the race where many racing stars have returned to point-to-pointing to run in Open Lightweights and have taken part in this historic race.

In addition, many young horses who have won their maiden here, have continued very successful careers on the track. For example previous course winner,  It Takes Time won the Ascot Gold Cup and wasthird in the Stayers Hurdle at the Cheltenham festival aswell as finshing fourth in the English Grand National. Royal Caviar, who won his maiden in 2013, went on to win four times on the track as well as finishing fourth in the 2017 Arkle chase at the Cheltenham festival.

The Colin Bowe-trained NAPOLEAN BLUE ended last season as a well-beaten favourite at Inchydoney, finishing 23-lengths in arrears of Zero Ten. He had entered that race following a very promising debut run at Dawstown, where he was narrowly touched off. That experience from the spring should really stand to him here. Stablemate Rath An Iur has been consistent to date, whilst northern raider Blue Flight would be a threat on his performance behind the well-related Some Man at Portrush.

LARA TROT, who is out of a half-sister to the Galway Plate winner Ballyholland, caught the eye on her debut at Tralee last May when she stayed-on strongly to finish a very close third in a race which saw the front three pull well clear. Frozen Motion made the frame on both starts last season, whilst Chesapeake, who cost 62,000 Euros as a three-year-old, has switched stables since two runs last spring and will be worth keeping an eye on now under the care of Gordon Elliott. Meanwhile, Bellewstown-third Robin On The Hill heads over obstacles for the first time here.

It was a notable training performance from Mick Goff to get SENATORS GLORY to finish placed twice over the final weekend of the season on her return from well over three years on the track on what was also her first two starts for his yard. Given that she chased home star mare Maple Mons and Pass The Ball, a horse who has since won twice on the track during the summer, they are notable pieces of form which entitles her to line-up as a warm favourite. The locally-trained Presentingprincess was twice a winner last season, and like the selection, will also be in receipt of a valuable 5lb mares allowance. Puffy My Pistons may be best of the rest.

Philip Dempsey has his string in flying form of late with a recent double at Sligo alongside winners at Navan and Roscommon, suggesting that his ROBIN DE BROOME may well be the horse to follow in this contest. The Robin Des Pres gelding was running with credit around here on his debut in April before coming down at the last, and he followed that up with two promising efforts at Fairyhouse and Stradbally to finish the season. Mabeywhoknowsmabey could be the danger if leaving his Tralee run behind him, whilst Ardrahan was outrunning his odds at Dawstown when coming down two-out ensuring he is another for the shortlist.

Ourmanmassini kick-started his campaign by winning this race 12-months ago in what was one of eight victories in open company en route to the champion point-to-point horse title. He could face a much stiffer task this year however, with the presence of GILGAMBOA amongst the entries. The Enda Bolger-trained son of Westerner is a previous Grade 1 winner following success in the 2015 Ryanair Gold Cup and as such sets a very high standard. Eddies Miracle is closely matched with Ourmanmassini on their Kinsale race, whilst Change The Rules, twice a winner on the track during the spring, is another highly capable sort ensuring this looks a very competitive race.

ROCKMOUNT ROCKER was very unlucky not to get off the mark at Curraghmore in April and he followed that up by once again going close at Dawstown a number of weeks later. Whilst well-held at Dromahane on the last time we saw him, this could be an ideal opportunity for him. Mabeywhoknowsmabey is also entered earlier in the card but would hold claims here, alongside Thinkinginmysleep, a horse who has finished placed in three Downpatrick bumpers.
