Track Biography:

The Wexford foxhounds was formed in 1810 at Slevoy castle.

Our point-to-point has been in different locations over the years including Wexford racecourse, Gowran Park and Lingstown before being moved to its current location at Moorefields in November 2011. We run two meetings a year, one in the autumn at Knockmullen House, with our spring fixture taking place in Ballinaboola on the first weekend in February.

Set in the heart of Co. Wexford the course is left handed with a circuit of one mile and three fences in the home straight providing many exciting close finishes.

It is a very fair track of two long straights with two gentle left-handed bends, there are five fences on each circuit which measures a mile a lap.

The track has produced many top class individuals including the likes of Envoi Allen who made a winning debut in the four-year-old maiden in 2018 before progressing to become a multiple Grade 1 winner. That 2018 renewal also saw Appreciate It finish third, and he has also gone on to become a multiple Grade 1 winner in his own right for Willie Mullins.

On the first weekend of four-year-old races in 2018, the market will give the best indication of what is expected from these newcomers, which include some well-bred individuals such as Monsieur D?Arque, Nearly Perfect, and The Mulcair. Appreciate It has an eye-catching pedigree, as his handler Pat Doyle saddled his half-brother, Danny Kirwan, to run out one of the most impressive four-year-old winners during the autumn.

Local handler Sean Doyle is always worth following around here, and his TRICKS AND TRAILS, really caught the eye at Tinahely, as he had appeared to lose all chance when slipping with less than a mile to race, before powering home late. Arctic Road was well-backed ahead of his debut at Mainstown and ran with credit for a long way on that occasion, as too did, Noflashback and Speedy Cargo, who were closely matched when taking each other on at Turtulla.

Having produced another Flemensfirth mare, Monbeg Zena, to win this race in impressive fashion 12 months ago, much focus will likely fall on Sean Doyles newcomer, THE BEST IN TOWN. Any market support for her would be worth noting. Madera Express was backed into even-money favouritism ahead of her debut at Moira in December, and although she was unable to get off the mark, she was staying-on strongly all the way to the line in testing conditions. Connections will be seeking compensation here. Killisk Ben Rose and Berboru are others to have shown promise to date.

It is hard to look past BILLAWAY in this contest. The Tracy Gilmour-trained gelding was unfortunate to come down at the penultimate fence at Borris House before Christmas, in what looked a smart contest. Commanding Spirit and Dungarvan winner, La Cavsa Nostra, who were a considerable distance behind him on that occasion, have since franked the form, and he will likely be a warm order for this. Ard Chros, who stepped-up to finish a good fourth at Mainstown in December, would look the likely alternative.

CARRIGNAGAPPLE drops back from open company here having ran with real credit in that division at Tinahely last month, and he will be hotly fancied to repeat that run with a second success on Irish soil. Fennos Storm has failed to complete his last three outings, however he has twice scored in open company, and cannot be discounted on that basis. Whilst Rattle The Cage, Knockraha Boss and Longhouse Music have all caught the eye of late and they should go very close.

Preview

There are few horses in training more deserving of a maiden success than TROLL DOUDAIRIES, and the French-bred will look to follow-up five consecutive second-placed finishes, with victory here, having also hit the crossbar at this course back in November. Track recruit Whispering Hope ran well on his pointing debut at Knockinroe, and his placed track experience has to be respected here, ensuring he is the likely main danger. Skyhill Allstar ran one of his better races for some time in an English point at Barbury recently, and he would have place claims here with Ballyhoulihan, Laces Out and Vivalino.
