Track Biography:

Formed in November 1996, the Premier Harriers began running a point-to-point at Horse & Jockey in 2002, and as the name suggests, the surrounding area in the heart of Tipperary is deeply entrenched in the horse racing community.

Our annual point-to-point typically takes place on the Sunday before the Cheltenham Festival, and it is the perfect way to warm up for the Olympics of National Hunt racing. We have been blessed to have seen many future stars begin their journey to the top of the racing sport.

War of Attrition, Gold Cup hero in 2006, begun his racing career between the flags at our point-to-point in 2003. Seabass, who guided Katie Walsh to the highest placed finish for a lady rider in 2012 Aintree Grand National, won his maiden at our 2007 race meeting, whilst Minella Roccco, who finished second in the 2017 Cheltenham Gold Cup, won his maiden here in 2014. Just four days after which he was sold for £260,000 at the Cheltenham Festival Sales. 

That is one of the real attractions of our point-to-point. It gives you the opportunity to get up close and personal with the future stars of the racing world in a relaxed and family friendly environment.

How To Get There

By Road

From Dublin -  Take the N7 exit to Limerick/Cork/Waterford/N8/N9. Follow M7. Keep right at the fork to stay on M7, follow signs for Limerick/Cork/Newbridge/M8. Keep left at the fork to continue on M8, follow signs for Cork/Durrow. At junction 6, take the N62 exit to Thurles/Horse and Jockey. At the roundabout take the 1st exit. Turn right onto the R369. Turn left at the 2nd cross street (signs for Ballinure). Continue down that road, on left.

From Cork - Get on M8 in Cork from N8. Follow M8 to R639 in South Tipperary. Take exit 7 from M8. At the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto M8 heading to Dublin/Fermoy. At junction 7, take the R639 exit to Cashel/Dundrum. At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto R639. Continue on R639 for 10 km. Turn right (signs for Ballinure). Track is on the left

By Air

Our point-to-point is located an hour and a quarter from Cork airport and an hour and three quarters from Dublin airport.

Facilities

Unlike many racecourses where the runners race far off out of view, our track at Horse & Jockey is one mile around on each lap ensuring that is offers great views from the finishing straight right around the corner - so you will never miss a second of the action.

Whether you want to watch in front of the winning post, as the runners flash by, venture into the centre of the course for a full 360 degree view of the track, or why not base yourself at the final fence to take in the wonderful sight of a thoroughbred racehorse in full flight over a fence? The choice is yours - you will never get any closer to the action!

 

Food

One of the real joys of a point-to-point is just how close to the action you can get. That also includes our car park, ensuring a day's racing with us offers you the ideal opportunity to being a picnic for family and friends, and base it out of the back of your car.

Come along early and enjoy your picnic before the action gets under way, or take a break midway through the day's racing to enjoy your light refreshments.

If you are after something a bit warmer, we also have a catering unit on-site, serving a range of fast food such as burgers, sausages and chips, all you would need to keep you going.

Our track is conveniently located at the rear of the Horse & Jockey Hotel. This four-star family run hotel is well within walking distance of the track and is the perfect pitstop on the way to or from the course. The in-house bakery stocks delicious cakes, breads and pastries. If it is something a little more substantial you are after, why not check out the Silks Restaurant headed up by chef James Egan.

Beverages

Tea, coffee and soft drinks are available from a number of outlets on the course. There will be something to quench your thirst or curb your caffeine cravings.

We also have a drinks tent serving alcoholic beverages for anyone looking for something a little stronger !

Is there a dress code for point-to-points?

No, there is no dress code for the races. Please ensure to dress warmly though !

Yes, please just ensure to keep them on a lead at all times.

Yes, of course! It is a perfect location for a picnic from your boot. Or why not treat yourself to some deliciouc snacks from our on-course catering or pop down to the local Horse & Jockey Hotel after racing.

We are lucky enough to have wide open spaces for children to play in a safe enviroment.

No, we do not have an ATM on course. Thurles town is not far from the course and there is an ATM in the service station on the way into the town.

The latter could be the one to follow if appearing here, as this six-figure store purchase ran a big race from the front at Oldtown and only gave way late to a nice sort. That experience will stand to him here. Appreciate It, who had been sent off as a short-priced favourite at Ballinaboola, showed promise and is another who can run well.

She had stayed-on well at Durrow last season and a return to that form could see her as the one to beat. John Paul Brennan saddled the winner of a similar race at Tinahely recently and his OSCAR ACADEMY catches the eye here. The Oscar gelding finished fourth in a Lingstown four-year-old maiden 12 months ago that has worked out particularly well, with the first two home in that race holding entries at the upcoming Cheltenham Festival, including Flawless Escape, favourite for the Martin Pipe Hurdle. That would see him a big hope here. Old Rascals tried to make all on his debut at Cragmore recently and can step-up, whilst Classic Escape caught the eye before falling two-out at Kirkistown.

If she was to take up this potential engagement, she would seem the one to beat. Siege Of Tobruk was a fortunate winner before Christmas, however having got within two lengths of subsequent Punchestown Bumper runner-up, Danse Idol, on her penultimate start, she would look the obvious contender. Cloudy Day and Senators Glory are others who cannot be discounted.
