Track Biography:

Scarteen has long been synonymous with Hounds, Hunting and hospitality. When Thady and Anne Ryan retired to New Zealand in 1987, Chris and Sue took the reins and have maintained this tradition.

The Scarteen (Black and Tan) Hounds have been in the Ryan family for over 350 years and attract visitors from all over the world.

We have held our point-to-point at Kilfeacle on John Heaney’s land for over 15 years.  It has attracted many good horses over the years including the likes of Dorans Pride, Ned Kelly and First Lieutenant.

Always On The Ball and DUC DALLIER have shown some promise in two starts to date and they look the pick of the form horses in this. The newcomers contain a number of well-bred individuals that catch the eye. Shady Oaks is a half-brother to Maremmadiavola, who was a Listed winner at San Siro as a two-year-old, Midnight Master represents Andrew Slattery who has already had a nice four-year-old winner this season, whilst the French-bred Djebel Rome is out of a half-sister to Impek.

An open looking race where the tentative preference is given to QUEEN OF THE COURT as she has not yet run to date. Her challengers have not been in great form of late, but Baily Fox, who finished fourth in a Dromahane maiden when with Mouse Morris, could be the main danger if returning to that form on his first outing for the John Gleeson yard.

Its All A Lark has been a beaten favourite in her two last outings, most recently when well beaten in third at Tinahely last Sunday. That was a competitive race however, and she could be seen to better effect in this company. Preference is given to YOUNGOCONNOR who took a big step forward when she finished third and she will look to continue that progress in this.

The feature race of the day includes one of the star open horses on the circuit in recent seasons, SYDNEY PAGET, and he returned to the winners enclosure with an authoritative victory at Aghabullogue a fortnight ago. He once again sets the standard here. Former Tetretema winner, My Murphy, was back among the winners at Templencarriga when out battling the potentially re-opposing Rue Hill. Adamstown is a consistent sort, whilst Western Man can bounce back from a below par run at Boulta.

RATTLE THE CAGE was in great form before Christmas, recording back-to-back victories at Boulta, and he should thrive in the testing conditions here which could give him the edge over Timewaitsfornoone. He made very heavy work of his return at Aghabullogue, but is the notable entry here.

Big things were clearly expected of BILLAWAY as there was market support for him ahead of his debut at Borris House last month, and he was in the process of justifying that confidence before coming down at the second-last, whilst running a promising race. He could gain compensation here. Shannon Light will look to become the first maiden winner to emerge from the Dromahane contest which saw him chase home Hillary View in November, whilst Tippinawaynow, La Cavsa Nostra, Newlands Cross, Stornaway and Seedorf are all capable of getting involved.
