Track Biography:

East Down Foxhounds Point-to-Point course at Tyrella is situated at the foot of the picturesque Mourne Mountains made famous by the Percy French song.

With the 2018 Spring season, East Down will have been racing at Tyrella for fifty four years. Two meetings are held each Spring, in January and March.

Normally the first meeting of the Spring calendar in the Northern Region, Tyrella is a right handed undulating track where, given it’s close proximity to the sea and sandy soil is well drained and more often than not, produces good going.

How To Get There

By Road

From The South:
Take the M1 North from Dublin. In Newry take the A25 through Rathfriland. In Clough at T junction go right and immediately left to get to Tyrella.

From the West:
Leave the M1 at Lisburn (junction 6). Take the A1 turning off at Hillsborough. Follow the signs to Ballynahinch and then follow the signs for Newcastle. Go through Seaforde village and then Clough. At the end of Clough Main Street turn left, following the sign for Tyrell. The course is on the right after about four miles.

From the North:
Take the M2 to Belfast. Continue on to the M1. Leave the M1 at Lisburn (junction 6). Take the A1 turning off at Hillsborough. Follow the signs to Ballynahinch and then follow the signs for Newcastle. Facilities

Access for spectators is directly from the road into the car park which is adjacent to the start/finish straight. Visibility is excellent and the whole course can be seen from everywhere.

This allows racegoers to get up close to the action, often from the comfort of their car, should they wish to bring their own picnic for the family.

We have bookmakers on site and some will also show and take bets on track racing in both Ireland and England.
 

Food

Our outside catering vendor has a variety of catering options from tasty hot lunches to sandwiches and confectionary.

Beverages

Race goers can purchase teas, coffees and soft drinks from our outside catering outlet.

Is there a dress code for point-to-points?

We don?t have a dress code but do recommend suitable clothing.

Yes, no problem at all but they must be kept on a lead at all times.

Yes, we welcome visitors to bring their own picnics or refreshments but why not treat yourself to something from our outside caterers from your race winnings.

At our point-to-point, we are lucky to have wide open spaces for children to play in a safe environment.

No we do not provide an ATM so we recommend that you make a stop in the nearby towns on your way to the races.

A day at Tyrella point-to-point races is the ideal day out for all the family in the heart of the Mourne Country.

One of the real treats of racing at Tyrella, is just how close racegoers can get to the action.

Watch the horses being saddled up by their trainers before making your way to the parade ring where the horses, jockeys and connections gather to discuss their pre-race tactics.

TIMETOCHILL travelled particularly well when going on in the back straight on her latest outing at Borris House in very testing conditions last month. Whilst she did tire in the closing stages, it was a very eye-catching run and it would be no surprise to see her get her head in front here. Shes All Vintage was a faller in that same Borris race, and she ran well to chase home a more experienced rival at Tinahely more recently. She is open to further improvement, whilst Its All A Lark has finished third on all starts to date and is entitled to claims.

FINANCIAL OUTCOME has twice parted company with his rider, however, he was in the process of running a big race at Tinahely most recently when departing two-out. The potentially re-opposing Ballyart was behind him at the point, and with a clean round, he is certainly a leading contender. Of the others with previous form, Bridle Loanan has twice failed to justify his starting price but did take a step forward at Loughanmore, whilst Home Place is a consistent son of Mahler who is back from a break.

It is very hard to look past LAGAN ISLAND here as he looks to pick-up his third straight victory in this for the Sean McParlan. Having won his last two races by double figure distances, he is sure to be a warm favourite. Canadian Steel was a winner at Dowth Hall in the autumn and is a danger, as is Le Braye, who has his first start in winners company, having got his head in front at Mainstown in December, whilst Sizingdowntherhine will look to bounce back from a disappointment at Portrush.

EDDIES MIRACLE beat recent Aghabullogue victor, Sydney Paget, in good style at Ballinaboola, and providing his heavy final fence fall at Cork has not left its mark, a big run has to be expected. Chosen Dream ran out a very popular winner on his reappearance at Kirkistown and is a previous winner at this venue, ensuring he is likely set to go very close once again. Of the track recruits, former Grade 1 winner, Morning Assembly, is back from a long absence having not been seen since finishing eighth in the 2016 Aintree Grand National, but he is obviously a high class sort on his day, whilst Astre De La Cour has been bought out of the Robert Walford yard having risen to a career high mark over fences of 137.
