Track Biography:

The North Down point-to-point moved to its current course at Kirkistown in 2006 and have held three meetings each season since then. The course is located towards the eastern side of the Ards Peninsula near the village of Portavogie.  It’s in an area that was used as an airfield during the war and hence is very flat and well drained.

Kirkistown is a very level left handed course run over a circuit just short of a mile. Runners jump two fences close to the spectator’s area and a further three along the back straight.

Our November fixture is normally the final meeting of the autumn calendar in the northern area. Conversely, our February and March fixtures are two of the earliest in the northern spring calendar.

Some of the leading graduates from our point-to-point include Simonsig, Petit Mouchoir & Agus A Vic.

How To Get There

From Newtownards

Take the A20, signposted to Kircubbin/Portaferry. After Kircubbin turn left into the B173, signposted to Portavogie/Cloughey. Follow this road for about 3 miles and you will pass the Kirkistown Motor Racing Track on your left. After a further half mile you will see the entrance to our track on your left.

From Newry and south of the border

Take the A1 north to Hillsborough.  Then go through Hillsborough and follow the signs for Carryduff/Comber on the B178. Join the A21 and go through Comber to Newtownards. Follow the directions above from Newtownards. There is an alternative route using the Strangford to Portaferry ferry which is about 15 miles shorter.

From the West

Leave the M1 at Lisburn (junction 6). Take the A49 and then follow the signs for Carryduff/Comber on the B178. Join the A21 and go through Comber to Newtownards. Follow the directions above from Newtownards.

By Air

Our point-to-point is located an hour and a half from Belfast International airport and two and a half hours from Dublin airport.

Facilities

Access for spectators is directly from the road into the car park which is adjacent to the start/finish straight. Visibility is excellent and the whole course can be seen from everywhere.

Combined with our free parking, we are lucky to have a clear viewing track where all race goers can get up close to the action with our final fence located close to the car park so you can enjoy the thrill of the action from the comfort of your car.

In our bookmakers ring you can view and bet on any off-course races on the day in both England and Ireland.

In between races, spectators can avail of the catering options that we have on offer

Our outside catering vendor offers a choice of burgers, rolls, sausages and chips.

Beverages

Race goers can purchase teas, coffees and soft drinks from our outside catering outlet.

IS THERE A DRESS CODE FOR POINT-TO-POINTS?

We don't have a dress code but do recommend suitable clothing. The perfect excuse to bring out the wellies !

Yes, no problem at all but they must be kept on a lead at all times.

Yes, we welcome visitors to bring their own picnics or refreshments but why not treat yourself to something from our outside caterers from your race winnings.

At our point-to-point, we are lucky to have wide open spaces for children to play in a safe environment.

No, we do not provide an ATM so we recommend that you make a stop in the nearby towns on your way to the races.

Kirkistown point-to-point is an ideal day out for all the family, giving you the opportunity to sample the heart of national hunt racing.

Kirkistown Motor Racing Circuit is a permanent motorsport circuit located next door to the point-to-point which is between the villages of Kirkistown and Portavogie, on the Ards Peninsula of County Down.

CARTONNE went close on his debut in a small-field maiden at Necarne earlier in the month when just under three lengths behind Curtain Time. He should encounter another relatively small field here and sets the standard ahead of the Dromahane-third Crypto Currency and Azof Des Mottes. The latter having made the frame at Ballindenisk recently after a late departure at Cork on his debut.

CABALLO DIABLO has a very progressive profile having improved with each outing this season culminating with a career best effort when second to Forward Plan at Ballingarry last Saturday. With his stable in top form, he could be hard to defeat. Garde Des Champs was unable to recapture his autumn form at Ballingarry and will need to bounce back to figure here, with Gavroche Dallier another capable of making an impression in this as he was just two lengths behind Caballo Diablo in Ballingarry.

ROSE OF COOLBALLY had been unable to back up her fine second to the Hunter Chase-placed Clounts Glory at Dromahane over the Christmas period when make her belated return to action at Ballindenisk, but she is worth a second chance here. The returning Burnt Ash has run respectably in a number of races under rules since last being seen in this sphere including when second in a Carlisle bumper back in February. She is entered over hurdles at Kelso tomorrow, but if appearing here she would be a definite factor alongside Uppertown Mya and Getalady.

That would seem him as the standard bearer in this. Broughshane winner Greco seemed to win with a bit up his sleeve and is the obvious danger alongside the Dromahane winner Mortlach.

The Caroline McCalin-trained BALLYEARL has run two very fine efforts in defeat in Hunter Chase company in recent weeks, most notably at Down Royal when just under four lengths behind William Tyndale who won so impressively at Necarne. The similar return to older maiden company should be rewarded here. Texas Gold has been taking on winners throughout much of this season and is a contender back in this grade alongside Storm Hill, Thehairyfella, Clonmeen, Ranger Kid and Getaway Lodge who ensure this race has a very competitive look to it.
