Track Biography:

The Golden Vale hunt was revived by Tim Hyde and Michael Purcell.

The hounds were hunted by John Pickering, James Foley, Capt. Donald Swan, Rory Dicken, Tom O’Meara, Jim Quinlan and presently by Michael Comerford.

The point-to-point has been run annually at various venues. The first meeting was held at College Hill Templemore and has since been run at Thurles racecourse, Fairyhill Templemore, Coolkip Horse and Jockey, Glenbane Holycross and now at its current venue of Turtulla Thurles.

How To Get There

By Road

All roads will be signposted from both Horse and Jockey and Thurles.
On the N62 to Turtulla cross, turn left 1 mile from Thurles town. Then turn right at the Golf Course.

By Air

Our point-to-point is located two hours and fifteen minutes from Dublin airport.

We also provide a disability parking area with fence viewing on the home straight.

There is portaloo’s available on the day. 

In our bookmakers ring you can view and bet on any off-course races on the day in both England and Ireland.
 

Food

We have a marque serving home-made soups, sandwiches and cakes with all of the proceeds going towards Autism Ireland.

There will outside caterers on site also for those wanting some burger and chips!

Beverages

Race goers can purchase teas, coffees and soft drinks from our catering marquee.

Refreshments will also be available from on site caterers.

There is a wide variety of beverages on offer, something to suit everyone!

Is there a dress code for point-to-points?

No, we do not have an official dress code we just advise our race goers to wear warm coats, caps and good footwear.

Dogs are very welcome, but need to be kept on a lead at all times.

Yes, we welcome visitors to bring their own picnics or refreshments.

At our point-to-point, we are lucky to have wide open spaces for children to play in a safe environment.

No we do not provide an ATM so we recommend that you make a stop in the nearby town of Thurles on your way to the races.

Amenities

The Golden Vale point-to-point is the perfect day out for the family in the countryside and as an added bonus for parents all children U16’s have free admission.

Race goers have the opportunity to get a close up of the action when the runners are being saddled and paraded in the parade ring before their race. The fence in our home straight allows you to get a perfect viewing point of each race whether you are on foot or in the comfort of your car.

With Thurles town only a five minute drive from the track, there is a large selection of shops and restaurants to keep you busy within the area. Thurles is also steeped in GAA history as it is the birthplace of the Gaelic Athletic Association founded in 1884 by Hayes’ Hotel. Thurles is also home to Semple Stadium which is the second largest GAA stadium in Ireland with a capacity of 53,500.

KICKBACK was unable to follow up quite an eye-catching run against geldings at Moira when running at Tattersalls recently. That was a particularly strong race and it may be the case that she fares better here. Jetaway To Getaway has two solid efforts to her name and she could be the pic of the dangers.

IN LIMBO was something of an eye-catcher when staying on to take third at Tattersalls last month having not enjoyed the smoothest of passages through the race. It would be no surprise to see him step up and take this. The Hero Next Door was a notable market mover when he made his debut at Loughanmore and whilst that money was not collected as he could only finish fourth, he is clearly expected to go well, whilst Coolmeen Park was a big priced store purchase that could step up from his Portrush debut.

FLASH CONROY is the name that stands out on paper after he had made an eye-catching debut at Tallow back in February when only losing out in the dying strides of a big-field maiden. The horse that finished 20 lengths behind him on that occasion has since won on his hurdling debut to advertise the form, and with the stable operating to a 30 per cent strike rate this term, he looks the one to beat. The Guinea Hunter produced an improved performance when second at Lisronagh recently and rated as a danger alongside U Asking Me and Farren Glory.

It is hard to get away from BRAIN POWER after he put up two very big performances in winning at both Moira and Tattersalls already this term. Chriss Dream is a 160-rated chaser who could be set for his open debut and adds particular interest to the race, but it is perhaps the return of Aloneamongmillions that will interest most as the Tetretema Hunter Chase victor won around here in January.

For Certified Hunters aged 5 years old and upwards only, maidens at starting, the property of subscribers to any Hunt in Ireland. Confined to Point to Point Handlers who held a Handlers Permit during the 2021/22 season and who since 1/1/98 have not trained more than 10 winners as a Point to Point handler or under any Rules of Racing or Steeplechasing at time of entry. Mares allowed 5lbs.

The INHS Committee are generously sponsoring this race with a BONUS to the winning owner of €1500. If it is necessary to run more than one division of this race the INHSC BONUS
of €1500 will be divided accordingly.

ASIAN MASTER finished second on his debut at Bellharbour in the spring when chasing home a horse who is now in the care of Willie Mullins and he will likely be a short-priced favourite for this. Mick Mixy has twice finished in the first four this season for Heather Kiernan and could be best of the rest if bouncing back from his latest run in Lisronagh.
