Track Biography:

The Avondhu foxhounds were formed in 1920, with point-to-point racing being held as part of the Cork Waterford circuit from the late 1930's until the present day. In the late 1950’s the meeting was held at Knockanard, Fermoy and racing was over banks.

In the 1960's the venue changed once again, this time to Lisnagar outside Rathcormac. The fixture remained here for a number of years before moving to Moorpark, located just outside Fermoy, where it stayed until 1994 where it return to the original venue at Knockanard, the current race venue.

Our fixture has attracted some good horses over the years including Keen Leader, For Bill, Missed That and Joacci. Missed That won on his only start between the flags as a five-year-old at Knockanard, he subsequently won the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival.

For Bill was a prolific race mare, clocking up eleven career wins including, two point-to-points, three national hunt flat races (bumpers), three hurdles and three chases, registering back type over hurdles and fences. The presenting mare has breed one runner thus far, Speak Easy, who won his maiden point-to-point at Kilworth in March of 2017 for the Donnnchadh Doyle yard and was subsequently sold to Joseph O'Brien for 220,000 pounds and now runs in the colours of J. P. McManus.

Nestled in the Irish countryside, a day out at Knockanard point-to-point is a perfect family occasion, get up close and personal with the future stars of the Irish National Hunt scene.

This race has developed an enviable reputation for producing future starts in recent years, with three of the last four editions of the race each producing a subsequent Grade 1 courtesy of Ferny Hollow, Captain Teague, and Jango Baie. That latter finished second 12 months ago for Mick Goff, who is again represented by Tiger Baie, whilst the 2023 edition was won by Derek OConnor and JP McManus with the exciting No Flies On Him, and they could seek to repeat the feat with either Goraibhmaithagat and Shuffle The Deck.

ACHILLE DES ROCS could be the one to side with here, as he finished a very creditable third at Ballinaboola recently in what looked like a decent heat. He could now reward the faith that his connections put in him when they parted with E80,000 to acquire him back in 2022. His stablemate Lanesborough was a short-priced favourite when third at Ballycrystal on debut, whilst the more experienced Carry On Tears comes here off a career-best at Dungarvan.

De Nordener brings the best recent form to the table in this. He has won two of his last three, and has experience in this discipline from his time with Enda Bolger, for whom he finished fifth and fourth in the last two editions of the Ladies Cup at Punchestown. The Bolger and Peter Maher runners are always respected in these races, whilst Singing Banjo has to be feared. Although now a 14-year-old, he thrives in this arena, having gone close in cross-country contests at both Punchestown and Cheltenham, particularly when the ground is on the better side.

SHEEPHAVEN FLYER finished an encouraging third on his stable debut in a decent contest at Ballycrystal last month that has already been franked by the runner-up going one better at Cragmore recently. He could be the one to side with in this over Bigbraveboy who needs to bounce back from a non-finish at Dromahane when sent off as the favourite. Gold Help Us, Walk Easy, and Arctic Skua look the best of the rest.

CONS ROCK could be hard to oppose in this for an in-form stable, particularly if re-appearing in the same form as when finishing second on his debut at Ballindenisk. That may have come over a year ago, but the form looks strong, with his conqueror now a three-time winner on the track for Alan King. Axmediffrent took a big step forward in Tallow last week and has the race fitness edge.
